Advancing Innovation in Cutaneous Oncology Through Collaboration and Discovery
Advancing Precision Oncology (APO), an initiative of Advancing Precision Medicine (APM), is proud to present the inaugural Peak Perspectives in Cutaneous Oncology, taking place in Aurora, Colorado, in partnership with the University of Colorado Anschutz Cancer Center.
Chaired by Dr. Sapna Patel, Dr. William Robinson Endowed Chair in Cancer Research and Director of the Cutaneous Oncology and Cell Therapy for Solid Tumors Programs at the University of Colorado Anschutz Cancer Center, this special one-day meeting will bring together distinguished national and international experts in melanoma and cutaneous oncology for a focused program highlighting emerging advances, evolving treatment strategies, and multidisciplinary perspectives shaping the future of skin cancer care.
The inaugural conference will also serve as a special celebration honoring the extraordinary career and contributions of Dr. William Robinson, whose longstanding leadership, mentorship, and dedication to melanoma research and patient care have profoundly impacted the field and generations of clinicians and investigators.
Designed to foster collaboration and meaningful discussion among clinicians, researchers, and healthcare professionals, the program will feature expert-led presentations and discussions addressing advances in melanoma therapeutics, immunotherapy, translational research, rare cutaneous malignancies, and precision medicine approaches in oncology.
Peak Perspectives in Cutaneous Oncology aims to provide a unique educational experience while recognizing and celebrating Dr. Robinson’s tremendous contributions to the advancement of melanoma care and research.
Continuing education credits (CME/CE/CPE and ABPath MOC) are planned for this activity. Complimentary registration, meals, and parking are provided to support broad participation and access to this important educational program.

Sapna Patel, MD, is a nationally and internationally recognized melanoma oncologist and clinical investigator at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, where she serves as Professor of Medicine in the Division of Medical Oncology, Leader of the Cutaneous Oncology Program, and Dr. William Robinson Endowed Chair in Cancer Research.
Dr. Patel specializes in the treatment of melanoma, including cutaneous, uveal, and rare melanoma subtypes, and leads innovative clinical and translational research efforts aimed at improving outcomes for patients with advanced disease. Her work focuses on immunotherapy, targeted therapies, and biomarker-driven treatment strategies, with the goal of advancing precision oncology and expanding therapeutic options for both common and rare skin cancers.
Prior to joining the University of Colorado, Dr. Patel spent more than 16 years at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, where she held leadership roles including Director of the Uveal Melanoma Program and Director of the Melanoma Fellowship Program. During this time, she helped build one of the largest clinical programs for metastatic uveal melanoma and led numerous investigator-initiated and multicenter clinical trials.
Dr. Patel serves as Chair of the Melanoma Committee of the SWOG Cancer Research Network and was the study chair of the landmark SWOG S1801 trial, a practice-changing study demonstrating the benefit of perioperative immunotherapy in melanoma, published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
She received her MD from the University of Texas Medical Branch and completed her internship and residency at the University of Colorado, followed by a fellowship in medical oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Through her leadership in clinical trials, translational research, and multidisciplinary care, Dr. Patel continues to advance the field of melanoma and cutaneous oncology, helping to shape the future of precision cancer therapy.

Dr. Mariah Brown is a Stanford- and Yale-trained Board-Certified Dermatologist and Board-Certified Micrographic and Dermatologic Surgeon who provides cutting edge surgical care combined with a compassionate and warm bedside manner. Dr. Brown is internationally recognized as an expert in the management of skin cancer, particularly in advanced surgical techniques to restore function and cosmesis after skin cancer removal.
Dr. Brown grew up in the Chicagoland area and completed her undergraduate degree at Stanford University, where she graduated with honors. She then attended Yale University for medical school, graduating cum laude. Dr. Brown completed her Residency in Dermatology and Fellowship in Mohs and Dermatologic Surgery at the University of Colorado.
Dr. Brown was a Full Professor of Dermatology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where she led the Dermatologic Surgery Fellowship Program and trained over 15 fellows. Dr. Brown has a national and international reputation as an expert in Mohs surgery and surgical reconstruction. She has completed over 10,000 Mohs surgeries in her career, has given over 100 presentations at national meetings, has published over 75 peer-reviewed articles, and and has directed multiple national courses on Mohs and dermatologic surgery. Dr. Brown has served on the Board of Directors of the American College of Mohs Surgery. Dr. Brown also has national expertise in nail surgery, scar revision, and pediatric dermatologic surgery. In 2024 and 2025, she was recognized as a 5280 Top Doctor.
Outside of work, Dr. Brown enjoys spending time with her husband and two children and is an avid skier.

Brian Cervenka, MD is a head and neck surgical oncologist at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, specializing in the treatment of cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, thyroid, nasal cavity, and skull base. His clinical expertise includes complex oncologic and reconstructive procedures, including local and microvascular free flap reconstruction, as well as airway reconstruction.
Dr. Cervenka’s approach to care emphasizes minimizing treatment-related side effects through the use of advanced and minimally invasive techniques, including robotic surgery. His work focuses on preserving function and improving recovery, while optimizing outcomes for patients undergoing complex head and neck cancer treatment.
He is deeply committed to a multidisciplinary model of care, collaborating closely with surgical, medical, and radiation oncologists, as well as speech therapists and patient navigators, to ensure comprehensive, patient-centered treatment. Dr. Cervenka values building long-term relationships with patients and supporting them throughout every stage of their cancer journey.

Dr. Couts is a translational research scientist who has focused on investigating melanoma throughout her entire scientific career. More recently, she has been studying the genetics and molecular biology underlying rare melanomas. Dr. Couts has also helped in developing new pre-clinical models of rare melanomas, which are being used to identify the most promising and effective new therapies for rare melanomas.

Dr. Davis specializes in medical oncology and is board certified as an oncology pharmacist (BCOP). Her clinical and academic work focuses on advancing multidisciplinary cancer care, precision medicine, and evidence-based oncology therapeutics.
Dr. Davis earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in 2015 following completion of her undergraduate studies at the University of New Hampshire. Mark B. Faries, MD is a surgical oncologist specializing in cutaneous oncology, with a primary focus on melanoma. He serves as Head of Surgical Oncology and Co-Director of the Melanoma Program at The Angeles Clinic and Research Institute, and is affiliated with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Dr. Faries is internationally recognized for his research in melanoma surgery, lymphatic biology, and tumor immunology. He has served as principal investigator of the landmark Multicenter Selective Lymphadenectomy Trial II, a global study that has significantly influenced the surgical management of melanoma. His work also includes clinical trials in minimally invasive lymph node dissection and emerging immunotherapeutic approaches.
In addition to leading multiple therapeutic clinical trials, Dr. Faries has overseen research involving thousands of patients and has contributed extensively to the field, with over 150 publications and presentations worldwide.

Caleb Freeman, MD is a dermatologic surgeon specializing in cutaneous oncology, with a focus on melanoma and skin cancer treatment. Christoffer Gebhardt, MD, is Professor of Dermato-Oncology and Experimental Dermatology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) in Hamburg, Germany. He serves as Head of the University Skin Cancer Center Hamburg and Vice Chair of the Department of Dermatology and Venereology. In addition, he is a board member of the University Comprehensive Cancer Center Hamburg and Director of the Fleur Hiege Center for Skin Cancer Research.
His primary areas of clinical and research focus include malignant melanoma and other forms of skin cancer, with particular emphasis on immunotherapy and molecular diagnostics, including liquid biopsy technologies. His research interests range from mechanistic studies of immunoresistance and metastasis to the development of biomarker-guided clinical trials.
Dr. Gebhardt is a board member of the German Dermatological Oncology Working Group (DeCOG/ADO) and previously served on the board of the German Society of Experimental Dermatology (ADF). He is also an executive board member of both the German Skin Cancer Foundation and the Roggenbuck Foundation.

His primary clinical interests focus on the diagnosis and treatment of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers, with particular expertise in immunotherapy, targeted therapies, and translational skin cancer research.
Professor Hauschild has served in numerous leadership roles within the global dermatologic oncology community, including Past President of the German Dermatologic Cooperative Oncology Group (DeCOG) and board member of the European Association of Dermato Oncology (EADO). Since 2021, he has served as President of the Melanoma World Society (MWS). He was Congress President of the 8th and 10th World Congress of Melanoma in 2013 and 2021 and served as President of the 11th World Congress of Melanoma in Athens, Greece, in 2025.
A highly accomplished clinical investigator, Professor Hauschild has served as principal investigator for more than 100 Phase I–III clinical trials involving melanoma, cutaneous lymphomas, and epithelial skin cancers. His contributions to cancer research have been recognized with the German Skin Cancer Award and the German Cancer Award.
Professor Hauschild has authored more than 420 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, The Lancet Oncology, and the Journal of Clinical Oncology, and has delivered invited presentations at more than 700 scientific conferences worldwide.

Dr. Max Julve is a medical oncologist and Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine (Oncology) at Stanford University School of Medicine, with a clinical and research focus in solid tumor cellular therapy and melanoma.
Dr. Julve completed his medical training at Barts and The Royal London School of Medicine in the United Kingdom, followed by internal medicine training at teaching hospitals across North and Central London. He was subsequently awarded a National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Academic Clinical Fellowship in Medical Oncology at Imperial College London. During this time, alongside his clinical training, he conducted translational research within the King’s College London Immunoengineering group, focusing on transcriptional optimization of CAR-T cell therapies.
Dr. Julve later completed advanced clinical fellowships in solid tumor cellular therapy and melanoma at The Royal Marsden Hospital, London, and earned an MD(Res) doctorate investigating the role of immunosuppressive granulocytes in patients receiving immunotherapy.
He is a clinical investigator specializing in melanoma, immuno-oncology, and solid tumor cellular therapy, with a particular emphasis on translating mechanistic insights from the laboratory into novel therapeutic strategies for patients.

Ryan Lanning, MD, PhD is a Principal Investigator and Associate Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Colorado Anschutz School of Medicine.
Dr. Lanning completed dual bachelor’s degrees in Biology and Chemistry at the University of California, Irvine, followed by a PhD in Medical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under the mentorship of Dr. Rakesh Jain, a pioneer in tumor angiogenesis and intravital imaging of the tumor microenvironment. He earned his MD from Harvard Medical School and completed his residency in Radiation Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
Dr. Lanning’s research focuses on the development of intravital and molecular imaging techniques to study the tumor microenvironment, with the goal of translating these technologies into clinical applications. His work bridges engineering, imaging, and oncology to advance precision approaches to cancer treatment.

Martin D. McCarter MD is a professor of surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine Anschutz Medical Campus and a member of the University of Colorado Cancer Center. After a residency in general surgery at the New York Hospital Cornell Medical School, he completed a fellowship in Surgical Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Since joining the Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Colorado in 2001, his clinical practice has evolved to focus on the treatment of cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, sarcoma and melanoma. He holds the Gary, Debbie, and Brandon Mandelbaum Endowed Chair in Melanoma Research and is the Surgical Program Director for the Esophageal and Gastric Multidisciplinary Program. Current research interests include elucidating the mechanisms of tumor induced immunosuppression and developing new methods and treatments to overcome this immunosuppression. He is the principal investigator for several investigator initiated clinical trials leveraging his teams’ discoveries in the laboratory to target specific immune enhancing strategies for melanoma patients. The development of tumor infiltrating lymphocytes as a personalized medical treatment holds tremendous potential for improving the care of patients with advanced melanoma and is a particular area of current research interest. He is committed to improving patient care through a team-based multidisciplinary approach and advancing medical knowledge through both clinical and translational research. Engaging with and educating students, residents, and patients is a vital part of his professional passion to pay it forward.

Dr. Isabella C. Glitza Oliva is a physician-scientist and medical oncologist specializing in melanoma and other cutaneous malignancies. She serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Melanoma Medical Oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where she is dedicated to advancing innovative treatment strategies for patients with advanced skin cancers.
Dr. Glitza Oliva’s clinical and research efforts focus on immunotherapy, targeted therapies, and novel combination approaches for melanoma, with a particular interest in overcoming resistance mechanisms and improving outcomes for patients with brain metastases and rare melanoma subtypes. She is actively involved in the design and conduct of early-phase clinical trials and translational research aimed at bringing cutting-edge therapies from bench to bedside.
She earned her medical degree and PhD in Germany, followed by advanced training in the United States, and also holds a Master of Science degree, reflecting her strong foundation in both clinical care and scientific investigation. Dr. Glitza Oliva has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and is a recognized contributor to the field of melanoma research.

Marlana M. Orloff, MD, is the Alexander & Johnston Family Endowed Clinical Director in Uveal Melanoma and Professor in the Department of Medical Oncology at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of primary and advanced melanomas, with particular expertise in rare melanoma subtypes including uveal, conjunctival, and mucosal melanoma.
Dr. Orloff’s clinical and research efforts focus on advancing therapies for melanoma through translational research, biomarker development, and clinical trials evaluating novel therapeutic strategies. She works closely with the multidisciplinary ocular oncology team at Wills Eye Hospital to care for patients with primary and metastatic ocular melanoma and is actively involved in national and international clinical trials in melanoma and immunotherapy.
A recognized leader in melanoma research and precision oncology, Dr. Orloff has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and frequently presents on emerging advances in melanoma therapeutics, immunotherapy, and liver-directed treatment approaches for metastatic uveal melanoma. She is also an active member of Jefferson’s Melanoma Research Institute of Excellence, helping drive innovation in biomarker-guided and multidisciplinary melanoma care.

Shyam Raghavan, MD is an Associate Professor of Pathology with expertise in dermatopathology and gastrointestinal pathology. He completed his undergraduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and earned his medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine. He subsequently completed residency training at the University of California, San Francisco and Stanford, where he served as Chief Resident in Anatomic Pathology, followed by fellowships in selective pathology and dermatopathology at Stanford.
Dr. Raghavan’s clinical and research interests focus on the molecular basis of melanocytic neoplasms, including the genetic alterations underlying tumor development and histogenesis. He has a particular interest in the evaluation of challenging melanocytic lesions and dermal-based soft tissue tumors. In addition, his work in gastrointestinal pathology includes the study of inflammatory disorders and the diagnosis of rare and complex mesenchymal tumors.
He is committed to advancing diagnostic precision through the integration of molecular insights with histopathologic evaluation and is actively engaged in the consultation of complex cases.

Carissa Thomas, MD, PhD, FACS, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Colorado Anschutz School of Medicine and a fellowship-trained head and neck surgical oncologist and microvascular reconstructive surgeon at UCHealth. Dr. Thomas specializes in the surgical management and reconstruction of complex head and neck cancers, including oral cavity, pharyngeal, laryngeal, salivary gland, and cutaneous malignancies.
Dr. Thomas earned both her Doctor of Medicine and PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology from Baylor College of Medicine. She completed her residency in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Colorado, followed by fellowship training in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology and Microvascular Reconstruction at the University of Toronto.
Her translational research focuses on the role of the oral microbiome in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, including how dysbiosis influences tumor progression, treatment response, metastasis, and recurrence. She is actively investigating microbiome-based biomarkers and novel therapeutic approaches aimed at improving outcomes for patients with head and neck cancers. In addition, her research interests include cancer pain, surgical outcomes following major reconstructive procedures, and tumor microenvironment interactions.
Dr. Thomas is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and an active member of several national professional organizations, including the American Head and Neck Society and the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.

Joshua A. Wisell, M.D. is an Associate Professor of Pathology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where he serves as Director of Dermatopathology and Director of Quality for Anatomic Pathology. He is board certified in Anatomic Pathology and Dermatopathology and completed his pathology residency and dermatopathology fellowship at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Wisell’s clinical and academic interests include dermatopathology, cutaneous oncology, melanoma, melanocytic tumors, adnexal neoplasms, and quality improvement in anatomic pathology. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and is actively involved in the education of pathology residents, dermatopathology fellows, medical students, and practicing clinicians.
